GEANT4-based calibration of an organic liquid scintillator

A light-yield calibration of an NE 213A organic liquid scintillator detector has been performed using both monoenergetic and polyenergetic gamma-ray sources. Scintillation light was detected in a photomultiplier tube, the corresponding pulses were subjected to waveform digitization on event-by-event basis. The resulting Compton edges have analyzed GEANT4 simulation which models interactions ionizing radiation as well transport scintillation photons. is calibrated also compared well-established prescriptions used determine edges, ultimately functions. In process, simulation-based method produced information gain intrinsic pulse-height resolution detector. It facilitated previously inaccessible understanding systematic uncertainties associated with scintillation-light yield. numerical for locating edges. Ultimately, predicted much 17% lower calibrations than prescriptions. These indicate that approximately 35% given reaches photocathode. remarkable how two 50 year old calibrating yield scintillators stood test time.
